Acne is a skin disease caused due to changes induced by androgen stimulation in skin. It is more common in the face, upper chest and back, where there are maximum sebaceous follicles. Mild acne is non-inflammatory and severe acne is inflammatory. This skin condition is mostly common among male and female adolescents.
Acne is formed when follicles are blocked due to hyperkeratinization and formation of keratin and sebum blocks. Increased androgen production is the cause of enlarged sebaceous follicles and higher sebum production. The clogging of skin pores with sebum results in white heads (closed comedos); clogging with oxidized keratin causes black heads (open comedos).
Infection of these comedos by bacteria causes the inflammation, redness, scarring and hyper pigmentation. A family history of acne, hormonal activity during menstruation or puberty, stress, hyperactive sebaceous glands, anabolic steroids and some other medications can also cause these pustules.
Excess intake of Iodine can also cause acne. Excessive calorie intake through overeating stimulates hormonal activity causing worse skin conditions. Foods that help control lesions include proteins (reduce oil producing enzymes) and diets rich in Vitamin A, E, zinc and green tea (lowers androgen levels).
You can also go for clinical treatments. Treatments for acne include the topical bactericidals containing benzoyl peroxide as well as oral antibiotics or topical antibiotics. Females can use hormonal contraception pills for acne. Topical and oral retinoids, phototherapy, photodynamic therapy and laser treatments may also provide relief. And if you are in search of home remedies, then herbs like Aloe Vera, Neem, Turmeric and Papaya can be used to treat acne.
One of the commonest myths related to acne is the relation of diet with the causation of acne which is false and untrue…
