Let’s first begin with describing what aromatherapy is all about…
Aromatherapy is derived from,’Aroma’ which means ‘a pleasant or affording pleasure or enjoyable characteristic odor’ and ‘Therapy’ which means ‘Treatment of illness or disability’. In aroma therapy, the therapist will mostly use natural products like essential oils and aromatic products, which are extracted out from certain plants.

The essential oils as will evaporate readily at normal room temperature and pressure as they contain lighter phyto-molecules, which are obtained as a result of distillation process.

Now, you must be wondering how and where this amazing science was born??….
Aromatherapy is traced back to more than 3500 BC. It was the era of aromatic therapy- when man discovered aromatic compounds and was experimenting with them to find a suitable use. Back then the practice of using these compounds was invariably linked to charms, spells, rituals, magic, mysticism and religion. The ancient Egyptians used herbs and spices and burned incense sticks made from these aromatic compounds in reverence to their Gods. Their reasoning was that the smoke- that these compounds gave out-carried with it their hopes & wishes; prayers & dreams up to the heavens to the supreme beings.

Why use aromatherapy when there are so many other forms of medicine out there? You may ask me..
This form of medicine has been found to relax and calm the human mind and have a healing effect both mentally and physically. The mechanism of action seems to work on the fact that the essential oils that are used activates the nerve endings in the nose which then sends impulses to that part of the brain which deals with emotion and memory. This promotes a tranquillizing and peaceful effect. This is also used to relive stress both by massage and the process mentioned before. Aromatherapy is also used to heal medical conditions; it is exhilarating to the immune system in a way that it makes it stronger and better. It also stimulates the circulatory system and eases the blood flow to all parts of the body. There are different formulations for different conditions and an aroma therapist must be consulted for best results. This therapy is also used just for pure enjoyment as it helps relax and soothes the entire body thus enabling the mind to rest effectively and de-stress; thus promoting a healthy mind.
