Now before we go further into this condition, let’s see what the retina is? It is the inner most layer of the eye where the image is formed. From there the brain interprets it; image formed on the retina is inverted and this is carried to the brain which makes it erect and that’s how we see what we see. The retina has 10 layers of different cells which serve unique function and help in vision. Now due to old age and certain conditions like diabetes and hypertension etc there can be misalignment or damage to any of these layers giving rise to various conditions and disorders.
Central serous retinopathy [CSR] also known as idiopathic central serous choroidopathy is one such condition. The exact cause of CSR is not known. It typically affects males between 20-40 yrs of age. It is now believed that an increase in choroidal hyper-permeability causes a breach in the outer blood retinal barrier causing leakage of fluid and development of localized serous detachment of the neurosensory layer or the retina. The trigger factor for the hyper-permeability has not been completely understood as of yet. But factors like emotional stress, hypertension, and administration of systemic steroids have been reported to aggravate CSR.
The patient of CSR generally presents with sudden onset of painless loss of vision [6/9-6/24] associated with blind spot in the field of vision [scotoma], seeing objects smaller than they are [micropsia] or larger than they actually [macropsia] or distorted shapes and sizes of objects [metamorphopsia]. This occurs due to the separation of the cones in the macula and due to the misalignment there are areas of concentration and scarcity thus creating different variants of the object.
Treatment includes reassuring the patient as one of the major modalities as CSR undergoes spontaneous resolution in 80%-90% of cases. The visual acuity returns to normal or near normal in 4-12 weeks. Another treatment modality is laser photocoagulation which is indicated in long standing cases with marked loss of vision; patients having recurrent CSR with visual loss; and in patients having permanent loss of vision in the other eye due to this condition.

1I’ve had CSR on and off for 20 years. Laser will leave you with a small blind spot, but it will work. Stay away from all stimulants and cortisone. Most vitamins do not work. The only thing I have that seems to help is Bates eye exercises, you can find them on the internet and Utube.com (palming, swings, sunning-with eyes closed) and work on your acupuncture points around your eyes (find them on Utube.com and net.

329 years old, affected by CSR since June of 2007. Started with just “wavy lines”. This has affected both eyes. Now in May of 2009 I have got blind spots in my right eye, the worst is in my central vision. None in my left eye at this time. It causes a great deal of problems wtih reading now. Check out this link: http://www.switched.com/2009/04/05/implantable-telescope-lens-could-help-those-with-failing-vision?icid=sphere_wpcom_inline
This talks about a new telescope that they implant into your eye. This is for age related macular degenaration and it magnifies 2-3x and makes it so the blurred spot in your vision is switched with a good healthy spots on your retina to project the central vision and switches that bad spot for your side vision. So straight ahead vision is once again good. I am curious if it will work for CSR, I posted hopefully I will hear back. Thanks also for the exercises, I will try them. Do you know if blind spots can go away or are they permament? I know I have some scarring in my right eye already but I am hoping it’s not the cause of this.

8Unfortunately there is known definitive cure yet for this debilitating condition. People afflicted with the disease have to make sure they take all precautionary measures and get frequent eye check up’s done to evaluate the condition better. Any new advances or treatments that come out I’ll make sure to notify each one of you…

9is there a link between high levels of cortisol and CSR, I am a 62 year woman and have been suffering for about 8 years. I have a fairly large blind spot in the centre of my right eye and a smaller on in my left. I also suffer fron type 2 diabetes and morphea (a localised form of scleroderma). I am also putting on weight steadily although I have the symptoms of pernicious anaemia.

10I am 29 years old and CSR started on my 6th month of pregnancy and since then I have a blind spot on my right eye. Now, 6 months later I had more tests done which show that everything is back to normal, yet I still have a blind spot. I’ve been told that no treatment is required, and even though I still see the blind spot, everything is fine…

11Hi,
I was diagnosed with Chronic CSR in my left eye in March 2007, however my overall vision is good thanks to my right eye. I am interested in the link between computer screen use and CSR. Also I believe there is some link between cortisol & adrenalin. I had previously suffered from panic attacks which also has this as a factor. Otherwise i am fit and healthy. I have taken the vitamins, lutein etc and so far the the right eye is still pristine. I agree we should club together to compare symptoms and causes to help what seems to be a very poorly understood condition, and apparently treated as after thought to Macular degeneration.

12If indeed you have got all the tests done and they show that your condition has resolved then you need to take a few minutes to evaluate properly what it is that you see? Is the blind spot the same since when you got the condition first? Is it there the entire time or do you notice it only when you consciously think about it. Were you very troubled about the presence of that spot that you are unable to realize that it has gone? See at this point sitting in another place without seeing you it’ll be impossible for me to tell you exactly why this is happening so i am helping you out based on the assumption that the tests you have got done are true and accurate. Consult the appropriate physician and you should do much better. You already are if your condition has indeed resolved.

17I have been diagnosed for CSR on Aug 09. One day morning, after a flight, I had severe blured vision in right eye. After a few test within days, I was diagnosed for CSR. One specilist has recommeded injection of gas into eye ball to push the liquid out. And then to close the breach using laser.
Now it is three months since diagnosis. My vision has sabilised at 6/6, 6/12. Liquid volume is same. I have decided to wait for 8 more wekks before having any intervension.

1844 year old male with CSR in one eye. Showed up about 2 years ago. diagnosed by retnia specialist about 6 months ago. Suggested Laser treatment. I have not done that yet. Naturpathic Dr. suggested it could be due to food alergies and inflamation, so I had the food test about 3 months ago. I have avoided the foods I am alergic to for just over 3 months. It hasn’t been easy (wheat, eggs, milk,bakers/brewers yeast are include in the alergic list) but I have been extremely good at avoiding these things. No improvement in the eye. Well, actually at first it seemed that the smaller dot had disappeard but it recently reappeard. I am also taking supplements for eye nutrition. I just gave up alcohol completly to see if that might impact it. pretty much that just leaves caffine which I will give up next. I drink 2 or 3 cups of coffee a day. I had this condition years ago and it just cleared up with no life style changes. This time it seems to be sticking around. Looking back over the past 2 years my lifestyle changes include a loss of weight due to improved diet while trying to control Cholesterol. I am now around 15% body fat. Also, I started using Stevia, instead of sugar in my coffee, a couple of years ago. I don’t think that would be a cause but I figured I would mention it. I eat very little processed food so my msg/high fructose corn syrup/salt intake is next to nill. I don’t add salt. BP is typically 100/80. Pulse hangs out around 60. All other tests, including lipids, are well within the normal range. I do cardio exercise on a regular basis keeping my heart rate at 90% or above.

19I did some more reading on the web. One person claimed they could turn on/off CSR with their caffine intake. It got me to thinking. When my food allergy test came back with milk as one of the things I am allergic to, I cut back on my coffee intake because I basically only like coffee with a little milk. BTW, Coffee did not show up on the list of things I am allergic to. I went for a while drinking just one cup a day while I tried/got used to different alternatives (hemp, rice, oat, soy) you name it, I tried it. Well, it was only about 1 week into my new diet that I noticed the smaller spot had dissapeared. Just recently it has reappeared and the big spot never went away. So it occured to me that my coffee intake has increased, especially over the past month. I drink 3,4 or 5 cups a day. (no soda’s or other sources of caffine)
So Friday I gave up coffee/caffine. It will be interesting to see where this goes.

20I have been diagnosed with csr 4 weeks ago,
I’m fairly sure 40-50 hours per week competitive computer gaming was the cause.
Possibly too much adrenaline
